Used Tractor Bush Hogs
Bush hog maintenance Anyone ?
Hello i have a old bushhog that doesnt have any viewable brand name or model #. I want to maintain the thing and have greased the grease fittings with the drive shaft that hooks to the tractor. The bushhog has a gearbox in the center on the top side of the bushhog. The gearbox (?) has a foursided plug that you can use a wrench to unscrew. When i unscrew it i can dip my finger into it and the oil in there is a muddy color oil and it has a different smell than normal oil. It basically looks very old. I am wondering if the drain is the huge nut on the bottom and if so any advice on how to get that sucker off and what oil to use when i finish draining it?
There SHOULD be a drain plug similar to the fill plug SOMEWHERE on the gearbox. The large nut is usually the gear adjustment used to adjust the gear contact spacing/tension to account for wear on the gears. (At least it is on MINE!)
The other alternative is to use a hoist and turn it over so the old oil can drain out or use some kind of suction tube.
You are right, it needs new oil.
The standard oil for these is 90 weight gear oil available at any auto parts store. Do NOT overfill.
"Bushhog" is a brand name.
The machine's proper title is a "tractor, accessory, field/brush mower/cutter," according to the farm equipment dealer I deal with.
