The Curt Spyder Gooseneck Hitch Can Get You 25,000lbs Of Burly Gooseneck Towing Strength
Whether it's a huge RV or a herd of draft horses, if some serious towing is in your horizon, you're going to want to get it done by having the right equipment. So not only will you want a serious pickup truck and a well built trailer, but a hardcore hitch as well. Typically for this type of heavy load, a gooseneck is the first choice for many.
Class I and II hitches are often used for lighter loads with simple drawbar systems. Class III and IV hitches will take you up to about 10,000 pounds (roughly 4,536 kilograms) of gross trailer weight and are often handy if you're hauling campers and boats. Next in line would be the Class V hitches such as the CURT spyder gooseneck hitch that can handle up to roughly 25,000 pounds (approximately 11,000 kilograms).
Different from regular hitches that are installed on the back of the towing vehicle, gooseneck hitches, and the closely-related fifth wheel hitches, are anchored through the bed of a pickup truck.
Gooseneck hitches use a hitch ball to lock into place, while 5th wheel hitches use a wheel-shaped plate to achieve the connection. Besides their strength, gooseneck hitches are able to make tighter turns than the bumper hitch style, which makes them popular for the types of trailers they are designed to tow.
Depending on the model, gooseneck hitches generally cost a couple hundred dollars which may or may not include an installation kit. Some are easier to install on certain makes and models than others, so if you're the do-it-yourself type, you may want to keep that in mind.
The Spyder Gooseneck Hitch can handle quite a load, but it's important to double check whether it's up to the task by finding out the weight of the trailer, along with the weight of the trailer when it's fully loaded.
Hooking up to a few thousand pound trailer is one thing. Couple that with your six horses, saddles and other gear and you've really increase your load.
You also need to make sure your truck is up to the challenge. Manufacturers can usually provide information on their vehicles recommended towing capacities, but remember to give yourself a little leeway in case you need to add some cargo at the last minute or accidentally calculate the weight of your load too low.
When selecting a gooseneck hitch, it's also important to consider how the installation will go. Some versions can be much more complicated to install. Fortunately the spyder gooseneck hitch is very easy to install. Especially if you already have standard fifth wheel rails installed it will only take a few minutes.
