Magnaflow Catalytic Converters on a chevy?
I was wondering what magnaflow catalytic converters would do to my 99 chevy 3/4 ton 6.0L pickup? I already have a K&N air intake, true dual 40 series flowmasters. What I mean is, would the gas mileage improve any? power increase(I do haul some heavy trailers and other things as well)? sound level increase?
Anything that increases the efficiency of an engine will improve torque, mileage and throttle response. Basically an engine is a big air pump, the easier it sucks in air and breathes it out will improve performance.
I changed out the "cat" in one of my full size 4x4's for a performance high flow one as well as single 3 inch exhaust all the way back. The difference in torque was unbelievable and when going up long steep hills you could really notice a difference. Fuel consumption actually increased from 10 to a little over 12 in the city and on the freeway I got between 16 and 17 consistently.
I upgraded my Ford F250 V10 Crew Cab 4x4 the same way and noticed an improvement when pulling long hills with a 34 foot 5th wheel trailer. You may want to check the air filter box and the air "supply hose" going to the engine for restrictions. My V10 had an inverted cone that choked down the air going into the engine. I used a dremel tool to remove the "inverted cone" thus removing a major restriction and allowed more air to get to the engine.
EDIT: The 40 series are way too loud, I replaced my mufflers with some that were quieter and had 3 inch inlets and outlets. The engine had a nicer sound and jsut purred along.
