What Is The Appropriate Size For My Shed?
Once you've determined that you want to construct a shed your next step is to determine how big it needs to be. First, make a list of what you want to store in the shed. Do you think you may be using your shed as an area where you would be potting plants and performing similar activities or will it merely be for general storage? Or possibly you may want to use it as sort of a retreat where you can go to relax and find some peace and quiet. Now that you know what you want to keep in your new shed you'll need to make sure you'll have enough room for everything. Sheds, of course, come in all sizes ranging from 2 by 4 feet to a much larger structure that could be 16 by 20 feet.
When you're trying figure what shed size you need these are some things you need to take into consideration.
- Are you able to construct a shed in the size you want in the room available in your yard?
- Have you checked with your local building department to see if there are any regulations that may impact your shed construction plans.
- Is the location of your shed in compliance with the local zoning laws?
- How much will your shed cost to build?
Take four stakes and drive them into the ground to outline the footprint of the shed and that will show you how big your shed should be. Stretch a string from each stake so it shows the "footprint" of the proposed shed. Outlining your floor plan using this method will give you a clear idea if there will be enough room to house everything you want to store. If you have various large pieces of equipment such as a lawn tractor, snow blower, etc. A way to achieve this is to assemble everything together as if they were being stored in the shed. Then add the width and the length and multiply the result by two. This will define the floor space of your shed.
It's important to consider that when designing your shed you ultimately want it to be an attractive addition to your landscape rather than an eyesore. This means you wouldn't want to build a shed that is proportionally too big for your property and visually detracts from the appearance of your home.
Another factor that will save you money and facilitate construction is to design the shed to even number dimensions such as 8 feet by 10 feet, 10 feet by 10 feet, 10 feet by 12 feet, or 12 feet by 16 feet. You can easily find lumber and plywood stock that will coincide with these dimensions.
Your town's zoning restrictions may also play a part in determining the size of your proposed shed. The size and design of your shed may be subject to building restrictions enforced by your local zoning board. How high you are allowed to build your shed may also be restricted by the local zoning regulations. While you're at it, ask the building inspector for a list of documents that you 'll need to apply for a building permit.
Following these suggestions will help you to get your shed project off to a good start which will end by giving you a great deal of satisfaction when it's completed.
