Gambrel Shed Plans-2 Compelling Reasons to Build a Gambrel Shed
Building a gambrel shed is a smart move, provided you have a good set of gambrel shed plans close to hand. Because the tricky part is the part that makes it one of the most practical sheds you can build is the roof. In this article I look at how the roof is constructed and the very practical benefits of it’s design.
The gambrel shed was introduced to the American colonies by Dutch settlers. It’s distinctive feature is it’s roof design which is symmetrical but each side has 2 slopes.
1. The Roof
The upper slope is shallow and the lower one is steep and this creates amazing space in the roof space. In fact the semi circular shape of the roof space can be enhanced greatly by the use of sky lights which creates an enormous sense of space and reduces your lighting bill.
If you decide to use roof trusses rather than rafters in the roof’s construction you can enhance the storage capacity considerably. If you choose to leave the roof space open it would make an ideal artist’s workshop and if you create an attic you will create extra storage space for yourself.
2. The Large Sliding Doors
Because of it’s design most gambrel sheds are fitted with large sliding doors making access for machinery and large goods very easy. And you can even put sliding doors on 2 sides thereby allowing for example a tractor to enter through one door and your normal household storage stuff through the other door.
To build the roof however you would be well advised to get a good set of gambrel shed plans as the roof would be a difficult and tricky task otherwise.
