Which Auto Recycling Gear Do You Need?
Fred Sanford, from the hit television comedy Sanford and Son, may be the defining figure in junkyards today, but modern day salvage operations have come a long way from the lone man and his pick-up truck. Gone are the days of old men and dogs, now replaced by businesses that must deal with the current demands of 21st century recycling. The current state of the economy and the fact that there are over 250 million registered vehicles in the United States means that not only will there be a huge demand for second-hand parts, but a constant supply and need for car disposal services. Therefore before opening an auto salvage yard, you need to decide which auto recycling gear do you need?
Transportation is basic
There's no getting around the fact that this is now a mechanized field and several key pieces of gear are needed, staring with a way to pick up the salvaged vehicles. A tow truck would be the cheapest place to begin, but the more expensive flat-bed would be preferred since it can not only tow, but carry immobilized cars, a situation common when dealing with salvaged automotive equipment. In the yard, a heavy duty tractor is a must to be able to pull large loads around. A crane is also necessary to lift and stack pre and post compacted vehicles.
Environmental considerations
Recycling means breaking down the components that can be used again, but those that cannot be must be disposed of properly within the regulations. Before the car can even see the crusher you may need an automotive fluid recycling station. This piece of equipment allows for removal of all the liquids and gases in a car such as the fuel, coolant, brake fluids, a/c gas, etc, in a manner safe to both operator and environment. While the car must be manually stripped of the recyclable bits like rubber and plastics, both those items may require a shredder so they can be fully broken down for reuse.
The staple in every scrap yard
It cannot be missed, and is a major part of any auto recycling yard, the crusher. Operating with hydraulic pressure its function is to crush the stripped vehicle bodies into small cubes of varying sizes, to aid in further storage and disposal.
The modern business edge
A computer should never be passed over as important gear. While not a piece of mechanical gear like a tractor or crusher, it is needed to track inventory, keep sales records, and can provide advertising and client communication via the internet. Its use is a clear indication of how far the auto recycling business has come.
