Tractor Drive Shaft
Can a vertical shaft engine power a shaft driven lawn tractor?
If the shaft runs horisontally out of the trans axle gear box how would you hook it up to an engine dropped through the frame?
The short answer is no. The long answer is because these samller engines have no oil pump and use a splash type oiling system like in the old model T engines. The vertical shaft engines if mounted horizontally would die from oil starvation. The splasher thing (sorry I do not recall the proper term) wont hit the oil on the down-stroke to "splash the oil" and lube the cylinder walls as the oil is nowon the side of where its downstroke of the crankshaft is as opposed to the bottom. You would also have to remount the carb 90 degrees from where it is to keep it upright as the float wouldn't work correctly.
If there is a horizontal version of this engine you could replace the "splasher thing" thats usually mounted on the connecting rod and remount the carb.
