Tractor Bush Hog Mowers
Finish mower cutting width v. tractor HP?
I have heard the general rule of thumb for running a rough cut mower (bush hog) is 4-5hp per cutting width foot. i.e. a 4ft bush hog needs 16hp min but 20hp to run optimal.
What is the standard for finishing mowers? I have seen 6ft finish mowers paired with 18hp tractors for sale.
I currently have a 24hp tractor pulling a 4ft hog, and am considering getting a finish mower of the widest width possible with good performance so I can spend less time mowing my 15 acres. I also realize I'd probably have to get some more weights.
I currently run a 6' cut Bush Hog rotary mower on my 231 Massey tractor and a 5' Bush Hog finish mower behind a 1240 Massey. Both are very well matched for what I do. I have a farm in AL that I have slowly converted to pine trees. I still retain about 30 to 40 acres of open ground that I mow each year. Around the large yard I use a 16hp riding mower and move up to the finishing mower a little further away. In the old fields I use the 231 with the rotary mower. In July and August after two or three cuttings the Bahia, Johnson and Bermuda grass gets really tough. I can tell a big difference in sharp blades dull ones on both mowers. If your setup works well that's about all that matters. I think mine is fairly well matched. Good luck..
