Tractor And Farm Trader
If you or anyone on your farm are operating tractors or other power machinery, the following suggestions may help to save a life...even your own.
1. Before starting a tractor, always look around for children. Never allow children to ride on tractors or machines. They are too unpredictable to insure safety. Learn to expect the unexpected.
2. If younger members of your family are to operate machinery, spend sufficient time with them to be certain they understand fully how to do the work safely. Safe operation is always correct operation.
3. Never refuel a tractor with the engine running or while the engine is hot. Provide fire extinguisher and first aid equipment for the machine...especially when harvesting corn and small grain.
4. Be absolutely certain all power take-off shields are in place. Never get off the tractor until power shafts stop turning.
5. Be sure the transmission is in neutral before attempting to start the engine; engage the clutch slowly, especially when on rough ground or when pulling a heavy load.
6. Always hitch a "trail-behind" load to the drawbar. Be careful, when working on rough or hilly ground and where tractor wheels may drop into holes or ditches. It's smart to have tractor wheels adjusted out as far as the job will permit for maximum stability.
7. Always keep tractor speed slow enough to ensure safety for conditions of field being worked. Slow down before turning off the road into a field and when turning in the field itself.
8. Use utmost safety precautions when traveling along a busy highway...especially after dark. Be sure to have headlights and taillights turned on. Use an implement warning lamp at the rear of the trailing implement. Remember...you're a sitting duck for those 70 m.p.h. automobiles, at the speed your tractor travels.
