Funny Groom Speech – Being Funny And Getting Away With It
Delivering a funny groom speech is more like spinning between the best mans speech and the father of the bride speech. The speech of the father most of the time is solemn while the speech of the best man is outright hilarious. The speech of the groom on the other hand is sincere and formal but would be a lot more interesting when it is enjoyable with the right amount of humor.
A funny and entertaining speech will always be welcome anywhere. What makes a funny groom speech a little difficult is the expectation for formality, sincerity, and functionality, but there are no hard rules, if the groom chooses a funny speech, the following could be pitfalls to avoid.
Guests at any wedding come from a diverse group composed of different ages, persuasions, and religion. Both families of the couple, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues come from different backgrounds. The guests at the wedding may also be meeting the bride for the first time. The degree of familiarity among the guests also differ. All these will make other guests less receptive to humor. If a funny speech is to be delivered then, the best route is to tell of anecdotes that are more universal in experience so that everybody could relate.
A good practice is talking and welcoming as many guests as possible and making certain that introductions are made so that there is a certain degree of familiarity with other guests. Thanking all those who attended (even when this done during speeches) will be a nice icebreaker.
Popular jokes and cliché should not be in the speech. During the opening sentences, the one liners, jokes and anecdotes must be really funny. A good way to do this is to attempt it out first with a friend or two. You would not want a joke that is met with silence so practice the delivery beforehand until you could do it to perfection. You will need more than one-liners and jokes during the course of the speech but if you get the audience laughing at your first joke, it will be easier to get them laughing again.
As the main man, you have to assure your bride's parents that their daughter is in the safest hands. So compliment everything that fascinated you to your bride but stay off complimenting her breasts and her buns. Keep your punch line at the end of the sentence. And no matter how inebriated you are stay off the Beauty and the Beast story. Sure your wife is the beauty but she may not have an iota of resemblance to her mother and a moron in the audience might just glance at her mother, you know?
By this time, your best man must already be done with his speech and have won some very good laughs. Tear him to shreds and be friendly about it. The audience that is primed to laugh will regard character assassinating the best man as reasonable game.
Whatever you do though, the key is dignified humor. A funny groom speech is not to outdo the laughs that the best man got away with.
