Mag Magneto
Calling all ATC and pilots. Can you help?
On Microsoft simulator there is something called KIAS and i don't know what that means, So if you can please tell me all about it.
Last question, is the Mag (magneto) the directional gyro?
I just learned about ILS, but i am not sure what ATC tells you. e.g stay short....
Also, what does the ATC operator tell the pilot before taking off (like holding short)? I am just confused because i heard ATC say's hold short for runway 27R, and hold short ILS for runway 27R. I am not sure.

KIAS stands for "indicated airspeed in knots." It's the speed of the aircraft shown on the airspeed indicator.
Indicated airspeed isn't the same as true airspeed. True airspeed (KTAS) is your actual speed through the air around you. Indicated airspeed is the speed measured by your instruments, but it is less than the true airspeed at high altitude. The higher you go, the bigger the difference between KIAS and KTAS, with KIAS always being lower.
Nevertheless, the airspeed indicator is designed to show KIAS because it is more closely related to the way the aircraft performs in the air. For most purposes, you use KIAS, and you hardly ever reference KTAS except when trying to compute your actual speed over the ground.
No, magneto is not the directional gyro. The magneto is the gadget that generates sparks for the spark plugs in the engine (for piston engines). The direction gyro is an instrument that shows you your current heading in the cockpit. Two completely different things.
The ILS or Instrument Landing System is a radio navigation system that allows you to make precise landings even in poor visibility. It's the standard way for aircraft to land under instrument flight rules, when the pilots can't see well enough to land visually. The ILS instruments in the cockpit have needles that show you which way to turn and whether to go up or down in order to descend safely towards the runway.
When ATC says "hold short," it means that you should stop right next to the runway without actually rolling onto it. When it's time for you to take off, ATC will clear you for takeoff, and then you can roll onto the runway.
First ATC will tell you to "hold short runway two seven right." You pull up to runway 27R and stop without actually rolling onto it, behind the yellow line. Shortly thereafter, ATC will tell you "winds two six zero at niner [or something similart), runway two seven right, cleared for takeoff." Then you can take off. "Hold short ILS two seven right" means that you should hold short of the ILS hold point, which is further back than the regular hold point and has a different line on the taxiway; it's used when the ILS radio path must be protected to allow incoming aircraft to use the ILS correctly.
