Briggs and Stratton engine repair?
I have a lawn tractor that has a Briggs and Stratton engine. The exhaust keeps falling out of the head. It is a threaded pipe about 6 inches long with a muffler welded to the end, the pipe screws into the head and over the years the head threads that it screws into have become worn. It can still be screwed into the head, but eventually falls out again after about 5 minutes or so. Any way to fix this once and for all?
That is a common problem you have with the muffler loosening. You have a missing lock nut on the 3/4 inch pipe. If you look at your Briggs Stratton repair book you will see a lock nut on the pipe.
Go to Lowes or hardware store and get and electrical lock nut used on a threaded 3/4 inch rigid pipe conduit. The lock nut is about 1/8 thick and it has a 3/4 NPT in it and is commonly used in conduit connections.
Once you get that locknut, tighten that pipe into the aluminum head best you can and take a screwdriver and hammer and tighten up that locknut jambing it right against the aluminum head surface.
The muffler will stay in there tightly and not loosen.
