Iveco Launches ECOSTRALIS in the UK
With a retail list price of just £3,000 higher than the comparable standard Iveco Stralis tractor unit, Iveco have brought the ECOSTRALIS to the UK.
First seen at Germany's IAA, the truck consists of lots of small detail changes which add up to a potential for higher fuel savings.
Independent trials carried out by TÜV SÜD have certified a 7.32% improvement in fuel consumption for ECOSTRALIS in comparison with other vehicles in the same class.
The Cursor 10, 460 hp engine is the adopted standard for the ECOSTRALIS range, available as a 6x2 or 4x2 tractor with either Active Space Super3 or Active Time cabs.
The ECOSTRALIS features a new engine mapping optimised for reducing fuel consumption. Furthermore, by means of a more careful torque delivery, linked to load and gear change patterns, significant savings can be obtained without decreasing either performance or commercial speed.
All Cursor engines use low viscosity synthetic oil which reduces consumption by a variable percentage from 1 to 2.5 per cent according to the journey. The oil change frequency is the longest in its class at 150,000 km.
A major benfit over the standard Stralis in that all ECOSTRALIS derivatives sold in the UK will benefit will from a comprehensive three year/420,000 km warranty as standard.
In addition to the drivetrain changes, the ECOSTRALIS also incorporates new aerodynamics and electronic safety systems. Iveco claim that it is "a clear candidate for the most efficient and environmentally sustainable heavy truck on the market."
ECOSTRALIS is also equipped with an ECO-switch that uses the vehicle weight information from the ECAS/EBS systems to limit engine torque according to the gross vehicle weight – ensuring overall performance in line with that of a fully laden vehicle. The ECO-switch works in partnership with the EuroTronic gearbox to only permit fully automatic mode, ensuring all gear changes are made to fine-tune the vehicle's fuel economy, which in turn delivers the maximum economy savings.
The ECOSTRALIS is also specified with new technology tyres which bring significant reductions in rolling resistance working in conjunction with the lifting axle on the 6x2 twin steer tractor. The new 315/70 R 22.5 tyres are matched with the 2.64:1 rear axle ratio to deliver an ideal drive ratio optimised for economy and driveability.
In addition to its technical specification, Iveco is offering its ‘Blue&Me Fleet' telematics system, developed on the Fiat-Microsoft Blue&Me platform, in conjunction with Qualcomm, global leader in fleet management solutions. Qualcomm's telematics services are fully compatible with the ECOSTRALIS' on-board computer and can provide operators with a wide range of real time data from all vehicles equipped with the necessary devices.
The EcoStralis joins Iveco's Mercedes Sprinter competitor, the Iveco Daily as a key part of Iveco's greener vehicle offerings. These now include electric, CNG and LNG alternatives.
