Planting pear & apple trees?
I ordered 4 trees and they should be here in a week or so. I dug some preliminary holes with a dirt scoop on the 3 point hitch of a tractor. The holes are about 3~4 feet across, but when I go down about 8~12 inches I hit shale. I planned on filling in the holes with good garden soil and then adding 8~12 inches of more soil on top of that. It's sort of like making a mound and planting the trees on top of the mound. Can I expect good results from this method?
Make sure that the beginning (wide part) of the trunk is flush to the ground. You might have to adjust the depth of the hole because the tree might not survive if it is buried too deep or too shallow. Prepare all equipments and implements before planting your trees. This is to prevent the roots from being exposed to the air. Avoiding air exposure to the roots will help with the tree's survival. When filling the holes with top soil, stomp it hard with your feet, don't stomp on the roots. Fill the hole with tightly packed soil, flush to the beginning of the trunk. Add your 8-12 inches of soil ArounD the trunk to make a bowl (do not add more soil near the trunk.) It should be the same circumference as the crown of the tree. This will collect the rain water. Once finished, if possible add a lot of water to ensure that there are no air pockets in the soil. Once dry, if needed, add soil to fix the eroded parts of your ''bowl'' and to ''flush up'' the beginning of the trunk. Sorry for the grammar, I am French! Good luck!
