Garden Tractor Plow Plans
Options for tractors for large garden?
We are planning on having about an acre garden and my husband is talking about just getting a riding lawn mower then buying plows, etc. Is this a good idea or is there a better (just as budget-friendly) alternative? Pros and cons?
I have a very large garden plot and can tell you that it is an investment that requires a lot of thought. I will also tell you that you really get what you pay for. I have went through several cheap tractors with limited capabilities before I came to the conclusion that doing it right the first time would have saved money and headaches. If you are willing to get a good tractor, there are many attachments that can be connected to it. These include tillers/plows (your back will thank you), brush hogs, thatchers, and the list goes on. You can also get a full fledged tractor or get a very good small lawn tractor that can do the same thing. Depends on how heavy duty you want to go. I have a dixie chopper mower that has several attachments and I love the zero turn radius for getting very close and around my crops. If you feel that you need to get a big heavy duty tractor, think about all the attachments you might need. You will want to plow/ till for sure, but you may also want it to spread seed, thatch or aerate for growing grass, front loader to move dirt/compost, ditch witch to dig for irrigation, and so on. You may not need all these features right away but having the capability is nice. It never fails..in the beginning you only want to start small and as time goes by your project will grow bigger so the flexibility is nice. Plan ahead for your tractor's future jobs and purchase good equipment.
