Turning Problematic Trash Into Useable Resources
While all trash is problematic some trash simply causes more problems that other trash. Rubber automobile tires is arguably the most problematic trash in the world today. While plastic and metal can take 100s of years to break down in landfills, estimates put the breakdown of rubber tires in the billion of years category. In other words there really isn't much you can do to get rid of the 275 million rubber tires that are sitting around junk yards and gas stations or is there?
While rubber tires may not break down easily there are a number of innovative ways that these tires are now being reused giving them new life and making something useful out of what would simply be a huge pile of accumulated trash. Here are just a few uses that these old tires are being put to today.
The Many Ways Tires Can Be Reused
Most people have spent at least a small portion of their childhood swinging on that old tire swing suspended from a tree limb. While this was indeed an innovative way to recycle that old tractor tire it didn't make much of dent in the huge trash pile of tires that were accumulating. So, over the years many intelligent people got to thinking and came up with some very innovative ways to turn those tire trash piles into useful products.
Rubber Mulch
Rubber mulch got it's first real notice when it began being used for playgrounds. Placing this mulch under swing sets and climbing apparatuses reduced playground injuries and made playgrounds safer than ever before. It wasn't long before landscaping companies picked up on using rubber mulch as a way to create ideal landscaping situations. Since rubber mulch doesn't wash away in the rain or blow away in most storms it really turned out to be of great use for a variety of landscaping work.
Planters And Purses
Rubber tires have also successful been turned into planters for gardens and even cute looking purses. Purses made from tires bear cute names such as the model T or the Sedan Bag. Surprisingly, many people had been painting and using old tires for their gardens for years to provide protection from mowers to small growing rose bushes and trees. It wasn't a big step for manufactures to begin making more modern day planters from those old tires sitting in trash heaps.
Housing Material
Probably one of the most amazing use for those old tires in those trash heaps is in using them for housing material. The tires were filled with dirt and they provide a well insulated wall structure for the building of homes. If these tires become more popular as building materials they can prove beneficial in a variety of ways. First, the homes will probably stand forever unless deliberately torn down and second they will serve to save on the destruction of trees as a building material.
