Ford Tractor Clutch

Being able to drive is liberating and also a lot of fun provided you do it well and follow the safety and road rules. For beginners there are some tips that make it easier to get started on a manual transmission. Many professional drivers feel that a manual transmission is the only real driving. An automatic transmission is just steering.
To learn to drive a manual transmission car it would be easier if you already know how to drive but not essential. Start practicing in an area that is perfectly flat with no obstructions and no pedestrian or vehicular traffic. First just sit in the car and make sure you are comfortable. You need to sit close enough to be able to push the clutch all the way to the floor. The gear shift should be easy to reach. Before you start moving take some time to familiarize yourself with the shift pattern.
To start the car make sure the parking brake is set and put the gear stick in the neutral position. Put the clutch to the floor and start the car. The car will run in neutral but modern cars will not start unless the clutch is fully depressed. Now you can release the hand brake since you are on a flat surface. To start moving it is considered a good idea for the beginner to let the clutch out slowly while the gear stick is in first gear without using the petrol pedal. This will let the beginner feel when the friction of the clutch engages and the car starts moving more easily. This is considered one of the most difficult things to learn about driving a manual car, so practice starting from a standing stop several times.
Once you can move forward you need to add petrol. When you feel the friction point of the clutch coming you can gently add petrol. This will allow you to release the clutch a little faster. Gradually you will learn to release the clutch and apply the petrol faster. Once you are moving you can depress the clutch and change gears to 2nd and higher. Compared to starting from a stop, you can let out the clutch much quicker when you are moving. The correct RPM you should change gears depends on the type of car. 3K RPM is good for economy but you should check the manual or ask someone about your particular car.
Parking brakes are very important for manual transmission cars. Since there is only the internal friction of the turned off motor unlike an automatic transmission where there is a locked parking position. First set the parking brake especially on hills. After that only take your foot off the brake. Also, leave the gearshift in reverse or first gear while parked.
To reduce speed or when doing downhill you may want to down-shift or go to a lower gear. Let off the petrol, press in the clutch, put the gear stick in a lower gear and release the clutch as you add petrol. Be careful not to downshift if you are revving high in the current gear. This may affect the motor and throw a belt or something worse. If you want to stop, it is better to use your brakes a little to warn the drivers behind you that you are slowing down. With down-shifting alone they will not see brake lights and know that you are slowing.
