Deterrence of predators is largely what you need to do when raising small animals. Barriers are commonly used - walls and fencing being the most popular. Guard dogs and other larger livestock can also deter animals that otherwise would prey on your source of "free food."

When I first had chickens I let them out during the day, knowing full well that they would return to the coop in the evening and I could lock them up for the night. I did this many days in a row without incident. After I let them out one day, I remembered about having tickets to the symphony performance that evening. So, I was faced with a problem to solve since I would have to leave for the symphony performance long before the chickens would return to roost.

Getting the chickens in early would be more difficult than herding cats, so I knew that was out of the question. Leaving the chickens unattended with an open coop while I was away at the symphony performance that night was also out of the question. Even if they were roosted, they would still be vulnerable to predators.

My first step in solving this problem was to remind myself that I was much smarter than any predator. And, I was equipped with various technologies to help me. I only had to think of an approach to solving my problem.

It took me a while, but I came up the solution. The solution was found in convincing the would-be predators that there was someone present around the chicken house. To simulate this, I used my stereo system. Since the chicken coop was very near the house, I placed both speakers outside the house and setup an educational tape on continuous loop play. This allowed me to have two human voices on the tape discussing their topic over and over again, until I arrived home to turn off the stereo and lock up the chicken house.

The solution worked just fine. The predators were held at bay by what they thought were two people talking about financial matters. All my chickens were safe and sound, and they thanked me for providing them an opportunity to learn plenty about personal finance, sound investment and building wealth.
