Using Engines, Mileage, Mufflers And More To Measure A Man
I have several important men in my life that are all very different. In an effort to size them up, I have employed the relationships that each of them has with autos in order to understand them a little better.
My own father has ever been very outdoorsy, which suited him perfectly. He worked as a biologist, but is retired now. Pick up a fossil here; chipping a rock there, that's my pop. He never managed to acquire any warmth for machinery. He was raised by his parents to act like a gentleman, but engines and gears seemed to produce the worst in him. I have early memories of him cursing the Industrial Age as he was bent over an engine.
My father would invariably change the tires on our Volkswagen van when they required it, but you would never see him drool over aftermarket center caps or custom chrome grille work on a car. You might see him checking the H2O level in the radiator or putting some Rustoleum on patches that had rusted on the van, but you would never see him using a toothbrush to scrub headlamps or using Q-tips to clean the knobs on the dash. These things just didn't take place in our garage.
On the other hand, my father-in-law is decidedly a car man. He can tell you the make, model and year of every vehicle that's travelled down the Pennsylvania turnpike. His ideal way to spend a Saturday afternoon would be checking out a 1962 Ford at a local Antique Club Car Show or scrubbing his own whitewalls.
He grew up in rural northern Pennsylvania and graduated rapidly from a teething ring to a pitchfork and pliers. Where he grew up, farm boys were expected to learn everything they could about animal farming and automobile mechanics. He has maintained his passion for gadgets, wheels, and engines, but has no interest in animals. He left the farm, never looking back, and went to college.
My hubby is a professor like his dad and his father-in-law, but that is where the resemblance finishes. He does not camp, collect rocks or meticulously wash his vehicles. His idea of a good afternoon is sipping java at Starbucks, marking tests and tripping along the bunny trails that are Facebook.
He puts petrol in the car, but would be more inclined to employ his Enkei center caps as paperweights on his desk, than as a trendy way to floss his ride. Not that he has anything against someone who obsesses over their center caps. He vacuums his vehicle bi-annually, but is content to ride about town with "Wash me!" scrawled above his rusty bumper for a year at a time.
Our daughter's boyfriend is exactly like my father in law, but a bit more juiced. He got a high performance muffler kit as a gift last month and has been excited ever since beyond his tailpipe rumbles deeply. You can see that our daughter is in the throes of love when you hear her talk about how you can hear him coming from a mile away.
There's not question that the relationships that men have with their cars can be complicated. On occasion, the car can be a reflection of a man's masculinity, while other men act as if their vehicles were a foe that are a nuisance to be conquered or at the very least, endured.
Some men blaspheme their automobiles and some name them. Some men give their cars heaps of TLC while some campaign for bragging rights because their car has the highest mileage or is the most beat up. Men swap car stories over beers, just like war tales are shared at the campfire.
Why else would the auto industry regularly sell billions of dollars in decals, automobile alarms, hoods, tailpipes, center caps, dash accessories, trick headlights, window tint, backup sensors, seat covers, rims, and chrome?
Whether the wheels in the driveway are fodder for swearing or cooing, I believe there's some inescapable mechanistic mojo going on - Kind of like to "If you build it, he will come."
